the easy tee dress in a woven {simple summer sew}

Summer is when I do the almost sewing for myself. That'southward because I ever want new skirts and dresses when information technology starts to warm upwardly, and both of those are generally easier to sew than, say, jeans and jackets. Final summertime I made a maxi dress using my free easy tee pattern – it was super easy to sew and very comfortable, then it got quite  a lot of wearable time. A few of you asked if I had tried a dress like this with a woven (non-stretchy fabric), so when started getting warm this spring that'south what I did.

I stuck pretty close to the easy tee maxi dress tutorial, with merely a few changes to suit the woven fabric, since the tutorial was written for utilize with a knit. First, I made the dress hit just below the human knee instead of maxi length – with no stretch in the skirt it might have been difficult to walk in at maxi length.

Next, I added a placket in the front end to make certain in that location would be enough of room to get information technology over my caput. In retrospect, I recall the neckline is roomy enough as is that I could take skipped this step. Only it'due south kind of fun to exit the placket unbuttoned and clothing it open up for a piddling diverseness:

Note: I used this great tutorial from Melly Sews to sew together in the forepart placket, and that was the showtime thing I did once I cutting out the fabric.

The 3rd change I made was to cut the sleeves a trivial longer and roomier, and the top of the dress a little looser. I just wanted to make sure the dress would still be plenty roomy fifty-fifty without a stretchy fabric. This is how information technology looked when I used the easy tee pattern to cut out the pieces (cherry dots show my cutting lines):

A little extra room, and enough length to turn the shirt into a dress. I cutting two pieces of what you lot see higher up (both on the fold) – ane for the front of the wearing apparel and one for the back.

Other than that, I sewed up the dress just like you come across in the easy tee maxi dress tutorial. With one more little change – instead of making a casing to run elastic through to cinch the waistline, I just sewed elastic right to the dress from the within at the waist.

If you give this a try, be sure to use a lightweight fabric that'south quite flowy – that way information technology will drape well and be cool and comfy in the summer weather!
